The short version
- WayMates is a free tool that helps a driver and their friends arrange shared trips. It is not a taxi or transport service.
- The trips, and any money shared for them, are arranged between you and your friends. WayMates handles no payments.
- Times are estimates, and notifications can be late. Drive safely, and never use the app in a way that distracts you while driving.
These terms apply to the WayMates app and to this website. By creating an account or using WayMates, you agree to them and to our Privacy Policy. If you don’t agree, please don’t use WayMates.
1. What WayMates is
WayMates helps a driver and the friends they take along arrange their trips: the driver plans each trip, friends answer and say when they are at the pickup point, everyone gets notifications, and the driver can record the rides and what was paid.
2. A tool for friends, not a transport service
- WayMates does not provide rides, employ drivers, or check drivers, vehicles, licences or insurance. Trips are arranged between the people in a group, under their own responsibility.
- Drivers are responsible for driving safely and lawfully, and for having a valid licence and insurance for the people they carry. Friends decide for themselves whom they ride with.
- WayMates is not a taxi, ride-hailing or commercial transport service, and must not be used as one where the law requires a licence for it.
3. Safety on the road
Plan before you set off, and don’t handle your phone while driving. Use buttons such as “I’m here” or “Check traffic” only when it is safe and legal to do so, for example when stopped. The live trip card on CarPlay is for glancing at only. Always follow the traffic rules and the instructions of the authorities.
4. Money
- WayMates does not process, hold or transfer money. The amounts in the app (prices, what was paid, what is owed, subscriptions) are notes that the driver keeps.
- Whether and how to share the costs of a trip is agreed between the driver and their friends; WayMates is not part of that agreement and cannot settle disagreements about it.
- Make sure your arrangement follows the law where you live, including any rules on carrying passengers for payment.
5. Your account
- You must be at least 13 years old to create an account, or older where the law of your country requires it.
- Give your real name or the name your friends know you by, keep your password safe, and tell us if you think someone else has used your account. You are responsible for what is done with your account.
- An account is for one person.
6. What you add
- You are responsible for what you add to WayMates: group and pickup point names, notes, and other people’s names, phone numbers and photos.
- Add other people’s details and photos only with their agreement.
- What you add remains yours. You allow us to store it and show it to the people in your groups, as the app needs to work.
7. Fair use
Don’t use WayMates to break the law, to harass, threaten or mislead anyone, or to pretend to be someone else. Don’t try to reach data that isn’t yours, get around the app’s limits (such as the daily traffic checks), overload or disrupt the service, or copy or take apart the app beyond what the law allows you to.
8. Free, with an optional plan for drivers later
WayMates is free. We plan to offer an optional paid plan for drivers, WayMates Pro, later on. Anything paid will be sold through the App Store or Google Play under their terms, and nothing will be charged without your clear agreement.
9. Availability and changes
- We work to keep WayMates running well, but it is provided “as is”. Pickup times are estimates, traffic times come from Google and can be wrong, and notifications can arrive late or not at all. Don’t rely on WayMates alone for anything that can’t wait.
- We may change, add or remove features, or stop WayMates altogether. Where we reasonably can, we will tell you in advance in the app.
10. Liability
As far as the law allows, we are not responsible for missed or late trips, for disagreements between drivers and friends (about money or anything else), for anything that happens during a trip, or for data lost from a free service. Nothing in these terms limits any right or liability that the law of your country does not allow us to limit.
11. Ending
You can stop using WayMates and delete your account at any time (Your profile → Delete account). We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms or puts others at risk.
12. The App Store and Google Play
If you got WayMates from the App Store, Apple’s Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies. These terms are between you and us, not Apple or Google, and they are not responsible for WayMates or its support.
13. Changes to these terms
If these terms change, we will update this page and the date at the top, and tell you about important changes in the app. If you keep using WayMates after a change, you accept the new terms.
